could i get some opinions on heds that attribute actions (usually done by country's leader) to countries ?? i have been reprimanded for doing this, and as a novice copy editor i really don't see what the big deal is...
thanks!

Elaborate, please. Do you mean heds like "U.S. Invades Iraq" or "Iran Harbors Terrorists"?

i was thinking more along the lines of
"U.S. signs peace accord"
but perhaps if you could take the time to share some of these distinctions i would understand better. Thanks!

I don't see much wrong with that construction. Not sure how else you'd do it.
I do hope that your paper gives you more furniture to tell the story (blurbs, kickers etc.). I don't know where you work, but one problem could be that your headline fonts are too large. Strange how the biggest papers (Times, WashPost, LA Times, WSJ) have the smallest hed fonts, while smaller papers tend to slap 72 pt. heds on A1 every day...
I'd ask your slot what he or she would prefer. Every slot has his own way of doing things, and I've found that you have to tailor your heds and copy to their whims...until you get to be a slot, then you can drive novice editors crazy yourself...
