I don't know where you work, but one problem could be that your headline fonts are too large. Strange how the biggest papers (Times, WashPost, LA Times, WSJ) have the smallest hed fonts, while smaller papers tend to slap 72 pt. heds on A1 every day...<p>I'd ask your slot what he or she would prefer. Every slot has his own way of doing things, and I've found that you have to tailor your heds and copy to their whims...until you get to be a slot, then you can drive novice editors crazy yourself...
