Avon is sporting a new line of crap for teenage girls. The line goes by the name mark., with the period. Luckily this is only going to be a one-time story and we won't have to deal with this punctuation abomination. But how would you handle it otherwise? Here's an example of the ugliness it causes:

Krubiner found out about mark. through a cousin who works at Avon's corporate headquarters in New York. Deborah Fine, president of Avon Future, a new division that serves as the umbrella for mark., projects that the line will generate $100 million in sales in 2004, the first full year of the
launch. Mark. is slated to be rolled out overseas in late 2004.

As a member of the target demographic for Avon's new line of crap, I can say with utmost certainty that "mark." neither thrills nor entices me to purchase.
On a different note, their ad campaign is rather inspired and intriguing, though.

Avon itself, in a press release, doesn't bother with the period.(It also doesn't have much use for capitalization.) But that's beside the point, of course. Of course, you don't use it. I would also uppercase "mark."

... and please note that the term "social beauty," which is meaningless, is also trademarked.

This strikes me as a drop in the bucket as compared to the continued use of a slammer with Yahoo in stories involving the company. Unlike with mark, the effect becomes worst when at the end of a sentence.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. Proper nouns are capitalized. That goes for Mark and E.E. Cummings and Matchbox Twenty.
And punctuation is a device meant to clarify the language, not muck it up. So that means Mark and Yahoo and Guess.
Avon can do whatever it wants with its logo. But we make the rules on capitalization and punctuation.
