If I see the term 'Shock and Awe' one more time, I think I will read nothing but the sports page from now on.

I wonder how many college football teams will have "Shock and Awe" on T-shirts at training camp.
(This is my first post. I'm a business copy editor at the Chicago Sun-Times.)

Sure, "shock and awe" is in need of some sleep. Maybe it can find a spot next to "embedded".

Just heard our local meteorologist use the term embedded to describe thunderstorms ("this line of embedded thunderstorms is moving....") Sure, the language has to evolve but that's just ridiculous, not to mention nonsense.

you could always substitute shocking and awful if you need a kicker for a standalone photo of burning Baghdad.
Carola

The nice part is that the mechanics of pronouncing it prime your throat and mouth to spit.

I meant that I hope it was the work of someone whose forte is not editing or headline writing, as is often the case with news sites affiliated with newspapers. Present company excluded, of course. I also know that there's a better than even chance that my "hope" is probably groundless.
[ April 08, 2003: Message edited by: blanp ]

I know it's not always the case with newspaper-affiliated Web sites, but at my shops we put a lot of pride and effort into headline writing.
Although our style is very different than our newspapers (we shoot for "tabloid"; they're more conservative), which sometimes provokes complaints, we often hear compliments from our print colleagues. Last week, the editor of one of our papers said we write better heds on their stories than their own night desk.
One reason might be that when filling jobs, I like to hire people with copy-editing experience.
Your mileage may vary.
[ April 08, 2003: Message edited by: Dean Betz ]
