Honest, I've READ my AP stylebook on this and don't find a reference on how to deal with former U.S. congressional representatives. Is it former U.S. Senator Ashley Wilkes? former senator Ashley Wilkes? former Georgia senator Ashley Wilkes? former U.S. Senator Ashley Wilkes (D-Georgia)? And if I missed it in the AP stylebook, I apologize and wish to know where to find it. Thanks.

The title remains capitalized. See entry under "former" (unless AP book has changed). AP also calls for abbreviating "Senator" before a name. (See "legislative titles.") Is it clear you're referring to a U.S. senator? Then you don't need the "U.S." Maybe something like this would work: "Former Sen. Joe Blow, a Democrat from Georgia . . .. Do you trust a response from a guy who had to edit a one-paragraph post twice?
