I liked his dancing, or I liked him dancing?
They took exception to Smith's wearing the hat, or to Smith wearing the hat? <p>I see the "him" and "Smith" so much now that I wonder if this is a lost battle and I should set down the sword. Anyone still fighting the good fight? Pros, cons?

They mean different things. I wouldn't hesitate to question this, although i'd have to know which the writer meant before changing it.

Wayne's right; the meanings are different. Our stylebook is clear that we should use the gerund where appropriate.
