"I want to not write someday,'' says Rick Bragg, ''I'm going to build me the best bass lake in Calhoun County, and I'm going to spend my old age walking around the weeds shootin' snakes." (Tennessean)
***No time like the present, Rick. Why not get started?***

Hmm. Does Bragg really talk that way -- "build me" and "shootin'." Or do his quotes have a way of getting exaggerated to accentuate his good ol' boy side?

Sure, you just train your coon dogs to chase raccoons onto your property; next thing you know they make a dam down by the creek and you got yourself a lake.
on edit: well, heck, it's BEAVERS that make dams. never mind.
[ August 18, 2003: Message edited by: tom mangan ]

He's five years older than me. We went to the same college and got our start at the same newspaper doing the same job. I lived in Calhoun County for a decade. But the way of life he writes about and the one I experienced are so different, I have always had a difficult time believing it. If anyone exaggerates Bragg's good ol' boy side, it's Bragg. It seems to sell books.
Still, I have to admit we do say "build me" and "shootin'," at least in casual conversation. And yes, you can "build" a lake in the South.
[ August 18, 2003: Message edited by: Tim Hathcock ]
