Recently was talking with someone about one of my favorite ridiculous things submitted by a reporter.
The reporter did a piece on a bridge collapse that took place years ago in Green Island, a small community near Albany, N.Y. The bridge was over a section of the Hudson that's about a quarter mile wide.
Story said the bridge collapse caused a 70-foot tidal wave in Troy.
Rim editor didn't notice it. I kicked it back to the city desk and a library search discovered that we'd dutifully reported this disaster several times before. No one was hurt and a couple buildings may have sustained a bit of damage. But it never occurred to anyone that a 70-foot wave would have drained the Hudson for miles and probably taken out the small cities in the vicinity and killed at least hundreds of people.
I guess the moral is to think before just lifting stuff out of prior stories.
