Yeah, Jon, that would be about 16,000 times worse...and SOMEONE will do it.

Bless you...just got our hed specs, which I am happy to say will rule out "Thanks for the Memories" or "The World Loses Hope." Won't even have to fight for a change.

Lost Hope...yet another "pun" that does not even begin to work both ways.

I'm sorry to hear that your slot would actually fight for that hed.

And isn't it singular: "Thanks for the Memory"?<p>[ July 29, 2003: Message edited by: Nicole Stockdale ]</p>

Well, that sure as hell won't stop anyone. As of 1:30 a.m. I note several Web sites already have some variant of the hed.

AND, a second-coming headline on the entertainment section: Thanks for the memory.<p>(But that's nothing compared with the over-the-top advance coverage of the Rolling Stones concert in Toronto on Wednesday that will draw more than 450,000. How many times can Mick Jagger's photo appear on a front page? Not enough, based on what's happening here.)

Ah, Bumf, your paper (actually, gasp, our paper) ran a hed just as bad: "So long, old friend."

I lobbied for "Goodbye, Old Paint" but was overruled.<p>It's funny. We had only like 15 years to think of a decent hed but were all stammering when it actually happened. Sheesh.<p>NYTimes obit was written by someone who died years ago. That's how long it was in the can.

My desk chief looked up a bunch of "memory" heds before, as he said, he ran out of patience:<p>"Fans thank Hope for the memories" -- The Huntington, W.Va., Herald-Dispatch<p>"Thanks for the memories" -- The Birmingham, Ala., News; the Dothan, Ala. Eagle; the Arizona Republic; the Oakland Tribune (which set it in a script typeface -- gag me); Florida Today;<p>"Thanks for the memory" -- the Los Angeles Daily News. Even getting the song title right is no excuse.

"Thanks for the memory, Bob" -- the Norwich, Conn., Bulletin<p>"Bob Hope -- Thanks for the memories" -- The Miami Herald<p>"Lindale man: Thanks for the memories, Bob Hope" -- the Rome, Ga., News-Tribune, apparently a localization.<p>"Thanks for the memories, Bob" -- the Chicago Sun-Times<p>"Thanks for the memories" -- the Chicago Tribune; the St. Paul Pioneer-Press; the Mississippi Press; <p>"Thanks for the memories, Mr. Hope" -- the Kane County, Ill., Chronicle.<p>"Thanks for the memory" -- the Fayetteville, N.C., Observer<p>"Thanks for the memories" -- the Greensboro, N.C., News & Observer

Are we sure about that title? I watched the segment of "Big Broadcast of 1938" and it clearly has him singing "Memories," plural. But I defer to TCEs.

I saw the part of that "Big Broadcast" segment, and during that portion, he was singing "memory," although he held the last syllable for so long I wonder if that didn't make it sound like "memories"?.....

Jumphed in the local rag's Style section said "Bereft of Hope," which made me laugh so hard I fell off the terlet.
