Cox News Service
ELIZABETH, W.Va. … She'll know she's home before she even
gets there.
She'll know it when she winds past the skinny mountain roads
whose names end with Fork, Creek, Run and Hollow; when she
passes barns painted with signs that advise ``Chew Mail Pouch
Tobacco''; when she first sniffs the mixed-up summer scents
here of hay and berry vines and run-over skunk.

This is the time of year for people whose usual idea of wildlife is Jillan's at the mall, after work, to roam out of their usual haunts and try to tell other Jillian's habitues what it's like. The fact that the writer noticed the smell of dead skunk suggests he or she is under 40. The fact that the proximate cause for that outburst was Jessica Lynch is immaterial.

All three sentences of your post confounded me, Pete, but in particular: Why is the ability to smell dead skunk a generational matter?

Yeah, I would think people over 40 would be more attuned to the smell of dead skunk, since they are more likely to have heard Loudon Wainwright III.
