The Des Moines Register used the word "butt" in an editorial, and not only did a reader complain (in a published letter), but the paper also apologized for the egregious offense.
The editors explained that they were trying to be edgy and crossed the line.

Stories topics we've covered recently in an attempt to be edgy: oral sex among teenagers and penis enlargment.
Headlines above said stories which contained any of these words: zero.

At what seminar did newspaper folks decide things had to be edgy?
In the continuing pursuit of edginess, Toronto Star film critic Geoff Pevere wrote the reason Katharine Hepburn was different from today's actresses was because she "never showed her ass."
Which could be true, however, repeating "ass" seven more times in the column took the edge off.
