I see that the term "metrosexual," which has bounced around the British press and its imperial subjects since 1994, is officially here. Since the New York Times ran a feature story on "metrosexuals" a few weeks ago, it's been "everywhere." Let's not forget that for our purposes, no one knows what it means and won't for quite a while, at which point it will be a cliché.
[ July 09, 2003: Message edited by: blanp ]

From Maureen Dowd today:
Perhaps that's why men are adapting, becoming more passive and turning into "metrosexuals," the new term for straight men who are feminized, with a taste for facials, grooming products and home design.

Please, not one more "sexual." Unless of course, it's "omnisexual," the urge to screw everything up completely.

Just one question: Why?

"Metrosexual" feels funny to me because, unlike other "-sexual" words, it's not describing a sexual orientation, it's describing a lifestyle. I'm all for new words, but this one just isn't right.

Hey, if conservatives can say they hate not gays but the gay "lifestyle" -- and so make sexuality a lifestyle, why can't we make a lifestyle into a sexuality?
(Good taste and common sense might offer some suggestions)

Sort of rhymes with "heterosexual."
And the best thing is that we'll be able to make fun of metrosexuals in a few weeks for being hopelessly behind the curve.
On a similar topic, I saw Carson Kressley from "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" on the Upper West Side today. Not surprisingly, he was really well groomed.
