There are two apparently unrelated books listed in the fall catalog of publisher Little, Brown and Co. The first is a memoir, ''American Sucker,'' by New Yorker film critic David Denby. ''Sucker'' recounts Denby's recent years of ''madness and then of recovered sanity'' after 2000, ''when his wife announced she was leaving him,'' according to the promotional copy. A few pages away from the Denby listing, we find a description of a new novel by Cathleen Schine, ''She Is Me.'' One of the plots in Schine's novel concerns a woman who leaves her husband for a woman, as Schine herself left her husband, Denby, three years ago. It’s a big shock to be evicted suddenly from your job. It didn’t help that I was long past 40. It didn’t help that the country was already testing hazmat suits for Iraq. Who cared about one lousy job when tens of thousands might die? I did.
