Lemme guess: You work in their office, according to their schedule, on their equipment, and yet somehow you're a "freelancer" who qualifies for no benefits. Ah, the freedom of self-employment! A-holes.

That wouldn't work in the Great White North. The Canada Revenue Agency (the effin tax collector) has rules about that, so if you tried to be an "on-site freelancer," the employer would simply be held responsible for back taxes, Canada Pension Plan contributions, and Employment Insurance premiums... the employee's share and the company's share. Protection for the workers. However, the company would have to get caught, first, so someone would have to rat them out.
