In this ad from ThomsonReuters for "entry-level" copy editor, see which qualifications come first [never mind "primary" responsibility]:

Administrative

1. Assists the Department Director and the Copyediting Manager in daily administrative tasks.

2. Distributes printed books to editors, copy editors, and Director.

3. Maintains inventory of office supplies.


Editorial

While training for full copyediting duties, assists book editors with manuscript preparation and assists copy editors with entering proofreading and other changes into publication database.

The Copy Editor's primary responsibility is to copyedit and review manuscript, proof, and camera copy to meet WG&L standards for grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, legal citation, and typography and to do TIGRE integration, to ensure proper presentation of material in electronic (Checkpoint) and print media platforms. The Copy Editor:

1. Copy edits manuscript, makes edits on WordPerfect file, and submits hardcopy manuscript and electronic files to the TIGRE Conversion group.

2. Integrates converted electronic TIGRE insert files into the product's data base to produce the first stage of proof for the proofreading.

3. Enters Proofreading's corrections from first proof and any editorial alterations from the product's author(s) into the product's data base to produce the second stage of proof.

4. Enters Proofreading corrections and author alterations from second proof into product data base to produce camera copy.

5. Reviews camera copy for completeness and accuracy.

6. Inspects the product on Checkpoint to ensure that the publication is up and accurate, with proper linking and table formatting.
