Check out the number of openings at the Bergen Record's desk

Wow.

Another post that proves my thesis that people inside newspapers are bailing on the industry as fast as, maybe faster than, its readers.

I'm just speculating, but it looks to me as if they're doing some sort of restructuring.

Or, did they just have a round of buyouts and find themselves with no editors at the end of it?

It looks like a restructuring, including a possible partial consolidation of copy desks. The Herald News and The Record still had separate copy desks when I left in the fall (I worked for one of their weeklies), but two of the supervisor position descriptions mentioned overseeing both dailies.

I'll have to check in with friends still at the company to see what's going on.

Sure seems like a restructuring. Also, there is no Guild there, so perhaps they just let a bunch of "high earners" go and hope to hire replacements at half the pay.

Restructuring/consolidating/universalizing Record & Herald/News desk. Everyone has to reapply for their job. What fun!
(all this from friends still there)

A co-worker always says this is "a rotten business." Perhaps he is right.

In any situation I can think of, I'd rather quit than apply for my own job.

Yup. That's pretty demeaning.

I've actually been in this situation before, and also was adamant that I would never reapply for my own job. But in order to get unemployment, you have to be fired -- and you can't get fired unless you reapply and don't get hired back. So I had to reapply. The whole sorry experience was made a bit more palatable when I applied for the job of editor. (I was a reporter at the time.) I had secured unemployment pay within the month.
