LA Observed reports changes at the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

Lowlights include: "...the positions of publisher and managing editor were eliminated today at the Long Beach Press-Telegram, along with the copy desk and most of the production jobs. Those functions will now be handled at the Daily Breeze, located in Torrance."

Did I mention dropping by a few Singleton Calif.-group papers back in the day? Had a formal interview in the Pleasanton office park that is the nerve center of the No. Cal. operations. Before that, tried to drop by their little suburban paper two blocks from my house and hand the editor a resume, but he hid in his office even though it was at street level and I had him on the phone. And the Press-Telegraph I dropped in on when I was down there and was greeted by a friendly receptionist with scared-looking editor types scurrying in the background. Both visits were in the last five years (by comparison, Mercury News folks told me I didnt have a chance in hell but took lots of time visiting with me when I inquired there about work.)
Those papers have an awful vibe I've never ecountered anywhere else. Funny, the paper I'm at now, the bosses are starting to get "the look" and everyone spends all day hiding out in our locked newspaper building. Siege mentality at its finest.
