The Tallahassee Democrat, a Gannett newspaper, currently has two
openings for strong copy editors/designers on combined news and sports desks -- one with a particular emphasis on sports -- in Florida's state capital city, Tallahassee, home to two major universities: Florida State and Florida A&M.

I'm sure this is not what you meant, but is there a worse idea on Earth than combined news and sports desks?

It's among the worst. Rare is the copy editor I've known in my 20 years in the business who is as interested in and adept at handling sports as news.

But I suspect most papers with this system don't care how capable their deskies are of doing this work, as long as they do it cheaply. Most likely, pagination is 90 percent of the job, anyway.

For the record, I toggle between sports and news all the time and I think I'm very good at both. I don't do them simultaneously on the same shift, but still. AND, I can lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds or higher.

Ditto with the exception of the weights bit.
Who could resist the joys of trying to interpret tripe like this

After playing second fiddle to the No. 3 batsmen, the No. 4s came into their own in 2007

Ah, but can you chew gum at the same time?

Here's to hoping this ad was written by the HR department.
