By Joe Strupp

Published: November 28, 2007 10:30 AM ET

NEW YORK The Kansas City Star is the latest mid-sized metro to offer buyouts, telling readers today that employees with 20 years of "uninterrupted service" can take the offer that gives 20 weeks’ pay.

*Our enterprise agreement specifies 84 weeks for such service. *

At a minimum [and it ain't much] it should be two weeks for every year of service.

I wouldn't go back to bed for two weeks a year. PS: are their guild benchmarks on such matters?

I can't answer that, but I have a vague recollection of a long-ago thread on this subject, and it was clear that in such situations the terms were much more generous in your neck o'the woods. I am too lazy to try to find it, but perhaps you or someone else is more motivated.

I think our contract calls for two weeks per year of service as severance, capped at 60 weeks, or some such.

Much less was offered in a buyout a few years ago, and some people actually took it. I can only assume they had jobs lined up. The company apparently has the option to offer less in the case of a buyout rather than a layoff, and it is an option they seem to pursue eagerly.
