American Metal Market, the leading news publication providing intelligence to the metals and steel sectors, is looking for a copy editor to join its New York staff.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished wordsmith who pays exceptional attention to detail. The copy editor will work as part of a news desk responsible for editing over 30 stories a day for our live and daily products as well as longer pieces submitted for our monthly magazine. The person who fills this post must have the ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and learn quickly within a dynamic newsroom environment. At least one year's experience is preferred but exceptional graduates will be considered.

Of course you'd need to know how many people are on the desk.

At a newspaper in upstate New York some years ago, the copy desk -- with maybe four people on the rim, at least one of whom was useless -- handled at least that many stories on an average weeknight.

Likewise at a medium-size Southwestern daily in the present day.

(Larger desk, same ratio.)

I've heard of that place, Phil. And today, four people on the rim is considered a cushy night. Try three or even two.
