Seeking copy editor/designer/Web producer

The Gainesville Sun - a 50,000-circulation, New York Times Regional newspaper based in the hometown of the University of Florida - seeks motivated individuals to join our universal desk. As a member of our team you would design pages, edit copy, write headlines and play a role in the daily production of our Web site.

And how about take photos, listen to complaints from readers, take subscription renewals and write columns and stories.

The Springfield News-Leader has immediate openings for a multi- talented journalist to help shape our publications on the Web and in print.

You will have online and print design and production responsibilities for our InfoCenter Delivery Desk, formerly the daily newspaper's copy desk.

We're looking for an editor with initiative. You will copy edit stories and write headlines, design print and online pages for news-leader.com (5m monthly page views), the daily News-Leader newspaper (56k daily; 86k Sun.) and a variety of specialty online and print magazines.

Background in copy editing, design and multimedia, including understanding of HTML, is a plus. We're not just a daily newspaper anymore, so you must be flexible and have the ability to adapt to changes in the media industry.

A college degree in journalism, information technology or other related degree and/or related work experience is required. We'll consider recent college graduates with the experience listed above.

***background in copy editing***
***college degree in...information technology***
****you must be flexible***

Time to take up yoga, push what you know about editing into the back of your brain, and learn HTML, because coding is more important than content. Oh, and really, for the InfoCenter Delivery Desk, they'll want somebody young and it doesn't matter what they know about copy editing (see name of desk) because they'll be cheap.

One day newspapers are going to wake up and realize that editors are needed in any medium that employs words.

Won't they?

As to that Gainesville ad, that's what the copy desk here does, in addition to handling wire copy from budget to page layout. That kind of system doesn't make for very good editing, but I'll wager that a copy editor who can put out decent pages under those circumstances could become an excellent straight-up editor or designer.

The web-print mix is going to be a reality for most of us. But there is no more need to understand this :
div align="center"><span class=" ........... source code (from this bullen board) than there is to know this:
cbs,7103lax0vfelogC814pevp+1rctfFrkconcol0rritlltfps6.5la100%rc142-144 .. an extract from a print pagination format (slightly scrambled, as duty demands).
Folks calling for those coding skills in editors understand neither news nor technology.
