He or she will ensure readers have an enjoyable experience every time they pick up the newspaper. (Help-wanted ad by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.)

I always thought "scratch-and-sniff" was an underused printing technology.

Good find, No. 1.

It would be nice if the people who create these ads would devote a bit of thought to what they're writing.

"The applicant should be experienced working in slot ..."

"Experience as a copy editor preferred."

One has to wonder what slot editors do and where they work at the AJC.

"... the preferred applicant will help deliver that by making sure our articles ... exceed AJC standards."

Interesting. Are they really "standards" if you have to exceed them?

At every paper I've ever worked at, the standards for poor headlines, misspelled words, bad grammar, incorrect diction and libel have been a maximum of zero. (Not that those standards are always met.)

But since the AJC expects you to "exceed" the paper's standards, that must mean that it's OK to make a certain number of blunders.

I wish the ad included some benchmarks, such as how many misspelled words you can let through in display type and still exceed the AJC's standards.

It sounds like a cushy gig.
