After reading ads like this, I confess: I'm not sure any longer just what the hell a "copy editor" is.

The news desk works afternoons and evenings, wrapping up by 10:30 p.m. unless we have late-breaking news. The eight-member team work split weekend shifts, either Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Thursday. In addition to the news section, the team is responsible for weekly feature sections and some monthly special sections, plus processing e-mail from our readers.

I wouldn't be too alarmed by the words in bold. It's a damn sight easier than clearing the telex machine every 20 minutes.

Surely clearing the Telex is copyboy's work, along with spooling tape and clothespinning it to the appropriate wire stories.

In the year in question, we had no copyboys and at one stage the copy and production chief sat on the only piece of furniture available - a milk crate, clutching a pica pole. Start-ups are fun. It should be noted that various pieces of automation wizardry can reduce the time spent processing readers emails to next to nix.

Unless it's in a dog food factory (I worked at one), stay away from any job with a description that includes "processing."
