The teaser got me to click on the ad. I mean, who wants to be just a copy editor?

Neighborhood News Inc. seeks a copy editor for a 30-hour-per-week position with The Salem Observer. Duties include processing community-submitted text and photos, compiling police logs and obituaries, proofreading and doing some page layout. Writing and taking photos is part of the job for all five of NNI's broadsheets. Expect to work longer Mondays and Tuesdays. ... Please, no calls.

I was halfway through dialing the number when I read that last sentence. Damn!

Mmm, 30 hours a week. Just few enough so they don't have to provide health insurance?

Or any other benefits. You know, little things like paid vacation and paid sick days. Never mind a 401k.

But you know it's a quality paper when they refer to "processing" and "compiling" what they doubtless call the "editorial product."

And "longer Mondays and Tuesdays" is ominously vague. Anyone up for 12-hour shifts?

I'm betting on unscheduled and unpaid OT, but what do I know?

Edit: Or at least OT but without time-and-a-half, I should have said.

Funny, I don't even see the chance to be just a copy editor. Its use of "proofreader" tells you how much copy you will actually edit.

And I guess with the alleged 30-hour weeks, less truly is more.

"Processing text." And 30 hours of paid time a week, plus 10 or 15 hours of "can you stick around till the job is finished? Thanks!"
