Ah yes, I remember being stuck with those. They used to be called Brass Cheques. Finally, after protest, the city desk agreed that someone in advertising should write them. Used to be the ad sales guys [all guys at the time] would sell a special deal on a store opening or some such with a guarantee that editorial copy would be writ to go with it. I did a few before they got shifted over to where they belong.

I believe someone finally noticed that less real news was getting in the paper while reporters were chasing down local businesses to conduct concocted interviews. Someone, please tell me the practice has disappeared entirely from the planet by now.
