Description:

Have you always wanted to be the editor so you can order the rest of the newsroom around while challenging the community with your extreme political views? Then this isn't the job for you. Instead, we're looking for an editor who knows how to tell good stories – the kind people will always make time to read – from breaking news to heartwarming features to in-depth reports. Excellent editing and layout skills along with attention to detail are mandatory; a background in narrative writing is a plus; and a pleasant personality and sense of humor will help. We use Macs and InDesign CS6. The editor also is in charge of our Web sites and social media strategy, so online experience would be a benefit as well. This is the perfect position for someone who likes to do everything.

The editor oversees local news coverage for both the Cherokee Scout and Andrews Journal, separate but affiliated weekly newspapers in Cherokee County, N.C. This is a beautiful valley in the Smoky Mountains with four rivers running through it, giving local residents a nice quality of life. We are owned by Community Newspapers Inc. and also can offer a competitive salary and bonus, health benefits, vacation and holiday pay, plus the opportunity for advancement once you show your skills.

Send a one-page letter stating why you think you'd be perfect for the position, plus your resume, three professional references, three articles you wrote (include one opinion piece), three pages you paginated and three articles you edited (both before and after versions; in addition, explain your thought process and why you made the changes) to Editor Position, P.O. Box 190, Murphy, NC 28906, or e-mail to dbrown@cherokeescout.com. Applicants should have a good education and at least seven years of journalism experience. Serious inquiries only, and no phone calls please. CNI, the Scout and Journal are equal-opportunity employers.
