Our news organization is based in St. George, Utah, an area that boasts some of the best outdoor recreation available in the United States. Hundreds of hiking trails, ATV routes and lakes provide opportunities for exercise and fun year-round. We’re centrally located, with St. George often serving as the base for vacationers who want to tour Zion, Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon national parks, as well as Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. More than 20 golf courses are located within our coverage area. And lovers of the arts can enjoy performances at Tuacahn Amphitheatre, known as “Broadway in the Desert” and at the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival. That "travel brochure" description is useful (maybe not to you, Phillip). If you're a small, unknown paper in a place that's unfamiliar to most job candidates, the lifestyle that you offer can be a selling point. If you have something to offer that's outside norm, like great recreation, it makes sense to let job hunters know.

Usually the travel-brochure treatment is given to gloss over low pay and/or onerous working conditions.

Maybe I'm a cynic, but I think those size papers typically underpay and overwork people, no matter their settings or travel descriptions (or lack of). If you're willing to take such a job, might as well do it someplace nice.

If you're gonna starve, at least you'll have something nice to look at [since you won't be able to afford the theater tickets or park admissions]. Or as we said in Cleveland, in winter, when some folks talked about working for the Orlando Sentinel or Miami Herald: Yeah, but they pay in sunshine.

Actually, you should be able to afford an annual national parks pass even on what tiny papers pay. Having been to the parks near St. George, I'd say they're not overselling the jaw-dropping outdoors in the area. Of course, ads are only the start, and any job candidate should thoroughly research and interview a company as well.
