From 1999:

Noel Nash, managing editor of the Florence Times daily and former sports editor of the Gainesville Sun, said capable copy editors can still write their own tickets in our business, but the definition of capable has changed.

"Someone capable was an aggressive word editor, had a flair for headline writing, paid attention to detail, had design skills and possessed broad experience in journalism and life," Nash said.

Now the prerequisites for sports copy editors in particular seem to be: (a) are they willing to work nights? (b) are they willing to work weekends? (c) are they agreeable to not writing? and (d) can they paginate?

"Boss, I just caught one of the sports copy editors in the act of writing."

'What was he writing?"

"A headline."

"Fire him."
