Going by my experience, I'd say more college towns should be that upfront about the interests of their readers and staffs.

Maybe this person is his or her own IT department, with lugging computers and servers a part of the job.

Doubt it -- that news org has been one of the leaders nationwide at establishing and exploiting its online presence. I remain perplexed.
