Preferred Skills:

- Knowledge of AP Style - Familiarity w/ the AP style manual.

This is a virtual position that involves working remotely. Must have own computer and online access. The ability to work independently under limited supervision is a must.

EDIT: That is, I checked the ad and sure enough, the job is unpaid.

Sounds more like a pro bono consulting and development assignment. Or too big of a favor to ask of anyone you cared about.

Last spring the U.S. Department of Labor issued new guidelines for unpaid internships. As I read them, this position would appear to be in violation, if they insist on calling the workers "interns":
Quote:
The following six criteria must be applied when making this determination:
1. The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training which would be given in an educational environment;
2. The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern;
3. The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff;
4. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern; and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded;
5. The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship; and
6. The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship.
If all of the factors listed above are met, an employment relationship does not exist under the FLSA, and the Act’s minimum wage and overtime provisions do not apply to the intern.

Surprised more companies aren't trying that tack in this environment.

No. 4 in the DOL guidelines is interesting. I was going to say "I hope my last employer got that memo," but it looks like they made employees of all the interns they had writing stories and shooting video when they were buying out their senior employees a couple of years back. Oh, No. 3, also.
