I've been out of the job-application grind for quite some time, so I was surprised to find that many companies that advertise jobs do not acknowledge responses.

Anyone who takes the time to respond to an ad deserves a reply. When I last did this sort of thing, in the 1980s, that was the etiquette.

Sad to say. The first I found out about the filling of a recent job for which I applied (not with my current employer) was when a note went out at my workplace about someone else in the building giving notice to take it!

Many companies aren't responding after interviews, let alone not acknowledging applications. Many are angry if you check with them two or three weeks after they've promised to talk with you. (Embarrassment sometimes is a factor -- positions are being abolished or filled from within after interviews occur.)

And HR is probably as understaffed these days as anyone else, so it's cutting what used to be fundamental services.

That no doubt is true but I do not apply to HR departments. I contact only real editors and/or the people for whom I would work directly.

Agreed. There's no excuse for not acknowledging an application nowadays, even if only by e-mail. It takes next to no effort.

Geeze. I've spent the last year applying for every job that doesn't include asking customers if they want fries with that. A response to an application is unheard of unless the company wants to interview you.

And I spent a year before that applying for journalism jobs only. Etiquette doesn't figure into the equation.
