Well, we've all seen the reports of carnage, and today's news is no exception. Five stories apart on the business wire are these two gems:

Belt-tightening in media squeezes more workers

Scripps to make pay, retirement cuts

Incidentally, I have worked for both Scripps and Media General, and don't envy my colleagues there.

Looks like AP forgot that it is stupid to insert meaningless pronouciation guides with names.

A family paper that I know just laid off something like 20 percent of staff on Tuesday.

Here (a not-family joint), we've been waiting for the ax to fall (again) for a few weeks now. A couple of the bars on the block must be loving it!

I know of a family paper that wants to cut people's pay and is considering layoffs.

The family paper I resigned from last August had laid off 30 people before I left, laid off at least 5 more newsroom employees after I left (and I would have been in that group, had I not resigned), and is now considering at least 15 more layoffs, including newsroom staff. It has also eliminated empty positions and held other positions open.

About a year ago I was told in a meeting to consider the plight of the poor owner, who had "leveraged" all his papers to buy ours.

It's a good time to be in another line of work.

No, when you work for a family paper, you will be laid off and cousin Fred with a GED will take your place.

A reporter and a photog were laid off from "my" old family-run newsroom today, bringing the number of reporters and photos to 13 -- with five editors.

We're getting close to the Radler/Black vision of the three-person newsroom -- one reporter/editor and two ad salesmen.
