S. Calif. wildfire burns church, castle

Quote:
By NOAKI SCHWARTZ, Associated Press Writer 22 minutes ago

MALIBU, Calif. - A wildfire driven by powerful Santa Ana wind threatened a university and forced the evacuation of hundreds of homes in the Malibu Hills on Sunday, authorities said. Flames destroyed a church and several homes, one of them a landmark castle.

I've seen photos of this landmark [I'll assume for argument's sake that it has been landmarked], but I have to ask: Does building something that looks like a castle make it a castle? [Hearst's San Simeon is often described as a castle, which it isn't, impressive as the place is.]

Yes.

Well, it depends on who you ask.

San Simeon is certainly massive, if not imposing.

The site, yes; the buildings less so, compared to the site. [And they were certainly not built in the same "castle" style as that Malibu folly.]

Errr - excuse my British ignorance, but what does "it has been landmarked" mean? When I started reading this post I thought the point was going to be that a castle couldn't be anything but a landmark ...

The states and the federal government maintain registers of historic landmarks. Official designation as a landmark confers to a site legal protections (e.g., against some types of development) and, sometimes, resources for its preservation. I believe it's akin to the British National Trust.

Used as a common noun, landmark does not necessarily denote that the property has "been landmarked."

I meant: Let's not go off on a tangent about landmark issues [but we did anyway]; what constitutes a castle?
