Our slot man is a fussy bugger. Has the cricket loving geek gone too far this time with this message to whimpering journos?

"Ghosts will resume at 2-14 this week, chasing
Wests' imposing 8-309 (declared) at Raby 3 should of course read ..... Ghosts will resume at 2-14 this week, chasing Wests' imposing 8-(dec)-309 at Raby 3."

This would be a non-issue, of course, anywhere else in the cricket-playing world, where they'd just write:

"Ghosts will resume at 14-2 this week, chasing Wests' imposing 309-8 (dec) at Raby 3."

But no. You have to be different. Serves you right.

I must say, this thread is a bit of a sticky wicket.

The esteemed Mr Hellglitter has a substantial number of pages to filll. The esteemed ana and the pithy Token Brit have what one might suspect to be a nodding acquaintance with those who move in mysterious ways, their wonders to perform.

Rendering 2-42 as 42-2 is a linguistic trait. My dear old thingie, one is saddened to find there are people who have never heard of Henry Blofeld..

Sadly, the esteemed Mr. Blofeld was before one's time, and even had one been sentient at the time, one was decidedly on the wrong continent, at any rate.

One must confess to not being an expert, but one has only seen cricket scores rendered with the wickets first in an Antipodean context, and thus one has always considered it rather an Australasian trait, rather than a linguistic one.

Now one must stop writing in this tone of voice, because one's head hurts.

New Zealand follows the English, rather than Australian practice.
My favourite piece of Blofeld commentary during a slow patch of play ''My, look at that. There's a white bus overtaking a red one. It's all terribly exciting.''

So, you mean we're not talking about the subject line?

Any relation to Ernst Stavro Blofeld?

Thanks for that. I wasn't sure about NZ, since I don't routinely read Kiwi newspapers and haven't been able to watch a televised series played in NZ for ages. So now we know the truth: It's just the Aussies. Contrarian buggers.

My friends from the UK love to talk about the Radio Four (I think?) commentators: "Oh, and we have a lovely apple cake in the studio, sent to us courtesy of Mrs. Robert Westingham-Phillips of Lancashire...."

I'm an American who came to appreciate cricket as an adult, so I'm sadly bereft of childhood cricket memories of my own. Alas.

Yeah, so, um, how 'bout them Cubs?

I sure hope Ana and our entire Australasia contingent can make it to the states for our annual Raccoon Convention in Great Falls.

Sometimes I think my job is too hard. Then I read sentences like this...

"Ghosts will resume at 14-2 this week, chasing Wests' imposing 309-8 (dec) at Raby 3."

...and it puts perspective on the whole thing. God bless the agate person on duty in cricket-playing parts of the world.
