When news of "Spamalot" first came out some time back, I rather got the impression it was going to be something of a stage version of "Holy Grail." I don't get much from this review that makes it sound like I'd want to see it — and that's coming from a hard-core Python fan.

They lost me at the Andrew Lloyd Webber comparison. Andrew Lloyd Webber is the anti-Python.

"Spam products have been spoofed by the Monty Python comedy team for decades," said Rick Meyer, senior product manager for Hormel.

This is somewhat misleading in that it implies that Python have continually gone off on Spam, whereas obviously the group broke up some time ago.

For the record, Spam was mentioned in exactly two Python sketches — though in one it was mentioned 63 times (not including the Vikings' song), with an additional 18 in the credits at the end of that episode (no. 25).

I'm surprised the "Spamalot" tins aren't sold at http://www.spam.com, since they've got every other bloody thing there, including Spam golf balls. They do,, however, have a link to the official "Spamalot" site, http://www.montypythonsspamalot.com/HighBand/homepage.html.

According to an article in "The New Yorker," it is pretty much a stage version of "Grail" with some of the group's other popular material stuffed in.

Here's what the nice people at Hormel will give you for mentioning "Spamalot" when visiting the SpamMobile.
