When you come across a long sentence soldered to another long sentence with as, put a period after the first sentence. Delete as. Capitalize the next word and make two sentences. The reader will understand that the second sentence follows the first, because it still follows it. This is a good idea for any sentence, but especially the lede. You don't want the reader to be winded early.
