"I messed up; I want to die," Francisco Jose Garzon Amo allegedly said, according to local media reports. "So many people dead, so many people dead."

When Francisco José Garzón Amo, 52, realised the enormity of the disaster, he told rescue teams: “I have f***ed it up. I want to die.”

Francisco José Garzón Amo, 52, is reported by the El Mundo newspaper to have told rescuers who dragged him from the wreckage: “I f***ed up. I want to die.”

The 52-year-old driver was to give his version of events leading up to the crash, as it emerged that in the aftermath he reportedly remarked: “I've ****ed it up. I want to die.”

The train’s driver survived the accident with slight injuries and was under police guard. He is “lucid and able to speak,” said Carmen Prieto, a spokeswoman for the Spanish Development Ministry.
