The Journal Register expects to complete the sale in mid-April, at which point it will terminate all of its employees, according to a letter filed with the state’s Workforce Development Agency.
The layoffs include 156 employees in advertising, 131 in editorial, 125 in circulation, 295 in operations and 137 people in other positions.
"We have asked the buyer to operate the business using substantially all of our current employees. We have expressed to the buyer that a competent and competitive employee population is critical to the company's ongoing success," wrote Robert Monteleone, chief human resources officer. "In accordance with the Asset Purchase Agreement, the buyer will decide which employees of Journal Register Company it will hire after the purchase."
