Measuring the celebrity of people, based on how well known they are.

The NYIndex lists the top-100 people in the Greater New York area who are noteworthy newsmakers. These names are ranked based on a number of criteria:
Using Factiva, a Dow Jones-owned media-archive service, about 25 New York-centric newspapers, magazines, websites and blogs are scanned daily and scored based on what names are mentioned, the number of times the name occurs and the placement of the mention in the article, such as in the first paragraph, in a headline or caption. In addition, Factiva scans Twitter.com feeds to score individuals based on the number of times they tweet, as well as the number of times they're mentioned in tweets. An algorithm then generates a Factiva influence score.
Using that score as a baseline, two other factors weight the results. First, an individual's score is increased in correlation to his or her industry's contribution to the gross domestic product. Second, individuals are given a nominal boost based on their Klout scores, which is a third-party measure of social-media activity.
