VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican says that Pope Benedict XVI will resign on Feb. 28. The announcement Monday was a surprise.
[AP via Yahoo!]

Yeah, but what about those other two guys I'm always reading about -- the leader of the world's billion Catholics and the pontiff? Are they quitting too? And what about the papal horse race?

Quote:
He emphasized that carrying out the duties of being pope — the leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics worldwide — requires "both strength of mind and body."

There are several papal contenders in the wings, but no obvious front-runner — the same situation when Benedict was elected pontiff in 2005 after the death of Pope John Paul II.
[ABC News]

People magazine calls it "totally unexpected," and shows the pope using a tablet computer. The Guardian blogs that the "news seems to have come as a complete surprise to everyone." [It also says, "The last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII in 1415. My colleague Alex Fenton-Thomas is looking into that and will have more shortly." No comment yet from Gregory XII.]

The bad sports at CNN have mentioned the "series of scandals." The commentariat is a lot ruder.

Fox News has the pipeline to God, so to speak:
Quote:
Pope Benedict XVI will resign at the end of February, the Vatican Press Office tells Fox News.

The Journal knows big news when it sees it, and the need for attribution.
Quote:
"The act of renouncing is a very rare occurrence," said Dario Morelli, a canon law Ph.D student working at Portolano Cavallo legal studio.

Update: No need to worry about retirement money; he must have cleaned up at the bookies.

Elected on April 19, 2005, Pope Benedict said his papacy would end on Feb. 28.
[Times]

The Times' long profile [mentioning the Holocaust and "a milestone toward Germany’s spiritual renewal" but nothing about Ratzinger's stint in the Hitler Youth] reads suspiciously like a repurposed obit, much as the Washington Post did with its canned obit when Spiro Agnew resigned.

Update: It's especially hard when you're not a 20th-century pope but a 21st. Also, mind the glassware on the high shelves.
Quote:
BENEDICT XVI is a good man but a poor pope. His resignation shakes something of the foundations of the world.

"The Pope, how many divisions does he have?" the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin once mocked.

But the papacy is still alive and strong while Soviet communism resides in the dustbin of history.

Benedict was always going to have a hard time following in the footsteps of John Paul II, the most charismatic, and perhaps the most influential, pope in the 20th century.

I'm guessing even Al Jazeera wouldn't have greenlit this one. Every place I worked ran a pope short in every Monday paper that followed Sunday-sermon day, and you weren't allowed any leeway in the hed whatsoever. So, yeah, a lot of "Pope Urges World Peace."

Okay, how did Al Jazeera play it? With an "Oh, yeah, that pope" lede, since other churches have popes, too.

Pope Benedict XVI of the Roman Catholic Church has decided to resign from his post due to ill health, the Vatican has announced.

It's also the only story I've seen, so far, that gets a reaction from a rabbi.

Yona Metzger, Israel's chief rabbi, praised Benedict's interfaith outreach programmes.
