The national economy came to a near-halt at the end of 2002 as wary consumers — worried about their jobs, investments and the prospect of war — slowed their spending. (Newsday)
WASHINGTON — The economy faltered in the final quarter of last year as consumers — nervous about a war with Iraq and their own job prospects and stock portfolios — turned cautious and increased their spending by the smallest amount in nearly a decade. (AP)
***I can't seem to find any evidence in support of the claim that "consumers" put off any purchases because of impending war. "Honey, let's wait a while on that new refrigerator till we see what that Saddam fellow does."
Maybe reservists, but they don't make "economic trends."***
[ January 30, 2003: Message edited by: blanp ]

It's subtle -- though crappy journalism -- but if you look closely, each lede is structured in such a way that it doesn't actually claim cause and effect. (It's just strongly implied.)
But that just brings up point 2: So then, why bother telling us that consumers are nervous?
Point 3: The economy came to a near-halt? Because consumers spent only slightly more than they'd done before??
