Our newsroom's city beat reporter (arguably the paper's best reporter) is taking a lot of flak today for this graf, which appeared in a story about the county GOP leader:
"Since becoming chairman in 2000, Oliver has raised the profile of the party with a headquarters in Myrtle Square Mall, extravagant balls and fund-raising muscle."
The mug of the guy that accompanies the story makes this tidbit even more rich.

Enough snow to make South Carolinians insane.
I'm from Nebraska, so I know real snow (I know, not like Michigan snow, but still substantial snow). Last night and tonight we had early deadlines so the trucks could get out OK.
This morning, there were continuous flurries for a few hours. The "accumulation" blew away, for the most part. The roads were barely even wet.
I hear they had "2-foot drifts" on the Outer Banks in N.C.
*gasp*

Making a big deal out of a party's headquarters
in a mall is trite. The fund-raising muscle
point ought to have a dollar estimate somewhere in the story. That a synonym for "balls" would have been better is beyond obvious.

Its OK. At least they only delayed most of the school openings. Around here they'd have been closed immediately.
As a former New Yorker, I too just shake my head at it all. (But isn't it also true that major snow on the Outer Banks is fairly uncommon?)
