Post subject: A protest against protests
PostPosted: Sat Jan 18, 2003 8:13 pm
AP has moved several stories today slugged "Anti-war protesters" in reference to the planned worldwide demonstrations against possible conflict in Iraq by U.S. troops. There are also several refences in stories to "anti-war protesters."<p>My question: Does this constitute a double negative of sorts? It seems clear that a "war protester" is someone who protests against war ... so, by definition, would an "anti-war protester" be someone who protests against, uh, anti-war sentiment? Or is this technically correct even though it carries a confusing connotation?

“The underlying motives for this government’s actions have always been greed and racism,” said Moonanum James of United American Indians of New England.
“In the spirit of Dr. King, in the spirit of Crazy Horse,” he said, “no blood for oil.”<p>*** Neil Young fans would likely agree.
