Star Tribune editor Anders Gyllenhaal says page 3 advertising in the main news section will be yanked for national and foreign news. He tells readers: "Outside of the front page, there's no better or more convenient piece of real estate in the newspaper than A3, which is why it will be home to this special report running Monday through Friday under the heading 'Datelines.'" (Romenesko)<p>***Hats off to the S-T, but how about the heading "news," or, better still, no "heading" at all. I'm tired of having to label everything in the newspaper beyond headlines and I want it to stop, now.***

Go to a Society of Newspaper Design or Amercian Society of News Editors conference sometime ... they are in LOVE with extraneous crap like this: formatting, digesting, breakouts, pullouts, readouts, labels, logos, overlines, blah blah blah ... anything that takes away from content. Go to one of those conference and see over a weekend why newspapers are in the sad state they're in ... and why many managing editors like Gyllenhaal are enthusiastic bandleaders on the Titanic Times ....
