WASHINGTON (AP) — Just call him “Doctor” Smith.
That's how some Capitol denizens have been addressing Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., since his colleague, heart surgeon and Tennessee Sen. Bill Frist, was elevated to Senate majority leader last month.
“I've had more people come up to me ... and call me 'Doctor',” an amused Smith said this week.
Smith — a frozen food executive before his election to the Senate in 1996 — reminds visitors that he is from Oregon and assures them that “Senator” is fine.
The confusion is understandable.<p>*** No, it isn't.

Do they look like twins separated at birth or something? Or is it just some inside joke that the rest of the world isn't privy to? Oh, wait, I got it. Frozen foods = frost. Frist, frost, it's all the same, right?<p>Good lord. (Heavy sigh.)

Susan, you have to read several grafs down to find out that "Both Frist and Smith are tall and slim, with carefully cropped brown hair, and both favor dark, tailored suits. The two men are the same age — 50 — and have offices down the hall from each other, on the fourth floor of the Russell Senate Office Building."<p>All of which falls in the "SFW?" category. Just why was this a basis for a story?

OK, maybe only a quarter.<p>I'm firmly in agreement with you here. What a total waste of space. I'd love to know how many papers actually ran it.
