MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Maurice Gibb of the famed 1970s vocal group the Bee Gees underwent emergency surgery for a blocked intestine and was in critical but stable condition, a hospital said Friday.
Known for their close harmonies and original sound, the Bee Gees are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and their 1977 contributions to the “Saturday Night Fever” album made it the best selling movie soundtrack ever. Among their disco hits on that album are “Stayin' Alive,” “More Than a Woman” and “How Deep Is Your Love.”
*** In my Web travels today, at least three Northwest dailies ran this as a brief with variations on the headline "Bee Gee stayin' alive."
I don't agree with blanp's absolute ban on wordplay, but even this is a bit much by my eminently flawed and pointedly perverse taste-o-meter ....

For once, you and I are in agreement! That is awful. And totally unnecessary.

I agree too. Maybe it would be appropriate after he has fully recovered. But not now.
[ January 12, 2003: Message edited by: Gary Kirchherr ]

Even more so, now that he's dead.
Count me as one who believes there's a place for word play, yet predicted there would be "Staying Alive" heds and took the straight path last night.

Perhaps Thomsen will provide names of newspapers that used the unfortunate words.

**Reuters, in its obit, reports:
A hospital spokeswoman, Kathleen Dorkowski, said Gibb had passed away but gave no details.

**How inconsiderate of Mr. Gibb.

Thanks for the chuckle, JJ. Meanwhile, what's with this "passed away" shit? What'd you pull that from, the Christian Science Monitor?
