AP Aerospace Writer
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Space shuttle Columbia's pure science mission initially was seen as a vehicle for an all-female crew, but that idea was abandoned.
Then it was proposed as a carrier for GoreSat, the Earth-observing spacecraft dreamed up by Vice President Al Gore, but that was put on ice by a Republican Congress.
Now an Israeli astronaut is at center stage.
*** Why, oh, why, do writers insist on starting their stories by telling us FIRST what the story is NOT about? As my first mentor in journalism told me: "If you're writing a story about a bear ... then tell me about the goddamn bear."

Interesting that the writer blamed the defeat of the GoreSat plan on "a Republican Congress," as if it were strictly a partisan thing.
Dear Marcia: Maybe GoreSat was defeated because it was a dumb idea. Hope that helps. Regards, Gary K.
