Post subject: Adventures in bad sportswriting

From Jim Cour, the Seattle-based AP sportswriter, on last night's Seattle Sonics game (I think):
Desmond Mason didn't answer any questions. His face said it all.
Woulda taken an extra step.
Coulda dunked the ball.
Shoulda checked the time on the clock.
Those thoughts may have raced through the guard's mind, but no one knew.
Mason wasn't talking after the game.
*** Which means he, the sportswriter, didn't have a freakin' clue. He might as well have written, "I shoulda checked the time on the clock," Mason's face told reporters after the game, even as his mouth remained silent. We don't quote faces, jerk.
