Mastering Motivation

By Jill Geisler
Why did you come to work today?
I'm not kidding. Why? Was it for love of journalism, your organization, your boss? Do you feel respected and rewarded? Are you motivated to do good work today?
Motivation is a fascinating topic. (Poynter.org)

***Can't prove it by that.***

Why is it every time I hear someone talking about motivating, or bringing in a motivational speaker, I *immediately* think of Chris Farley bellowing about "a van down by the river"?
[ December 18, 2002: Message edited by: JasonC ]

"Dr. Ink's" latest round of Poynter Porn here. I didn't think it could get worse than the sexy copy editor spiel, but alas, it has.
Someone needs to shut him up, tie him down and administer a saltpeter IV.
Then again, he'd probably enjoy that.

Horseshit like that is what depresses salaries in this business. There is a perception among some publishers that we "love this work" so much that we would do it for nothing, or next to nothing.
We get into this because we like it, or can't do anything else, or whatever. Once here, we need to make a living at it.
This site's wonderful "Jobs From Hell" section provides a good reminder that some publishers actually expect us to come in and do this work for the mere satisfaction of it. Baloney.
Whenever anyone with a lick of authority or who knows anyone with a lick of authority starts talking such nonsense, the hidden agenda is this, friends:
We'd much rather you did this work out of love for it. We don't really want to pay you much for it.

Amen. And the Geisler thing is worse. Why people pay them any mind is beyond me.
[ December 19, 2002: Message edited by: SusanV ]
