From a profile of Philadelphia Inquirer editor Walker Lundy in Philadelphia magazine.<p>
On the front page of the B section is a story about people who make a living cleaning up after other people’s pets. The copy desk came up with the headline: pet waste professionals answer a call to doody. Lundy calls it “the headline of the month.”<p>***Yes. October 1957.***

I had to read that "headline of the month" at least four times before I got it. Am I slow, or is it that bad?

Yes, it's that bad. There's just no way around the fact that Lundy is a bad fit for the Inky culture. Those heds were absolutely verboten when I was a copy editor there and Gene Foreman was the arbiter of style and taste. He didn't want you even <thinking> like that, let alone trying to slip it past the slot. <p>But maybe I've mellowed a bit...I don't like the hed on principle, but since I love "Caddyshack," (the swimming pool scene) I laughed.
