Lede a1 hed on one of the other local dailies:
Story is about the Turkey Trot, a Thanksgiving Day foot race that usually includes a bit of revelry, fun and general assholishness. I run it every year, probably for the last of those reasons.
This year, a guy collapsed dead right before the finish line. So the hed in that local daily, lede on the front page:
Man's death
dampens
Turkey Trot
great, huh?

Man, that made my day! Thanks.
But they got it wrong. Shouldn't it have been, in the time-tested tradition: "Man's death fails to dampen Turkey Trot"?
Don't they know that "dampen" is ALWAYS modified by "fails to"?
